A Bleak Review

Last week I logged into MySpace, something I rarely do. I had one new mail to my amazement. It was from a guy who had reviewed Bleak.

Some exceprts:

The song sounds as lifeless and cold as it’s title suggests, but only in a good way. It starts with a strong, repeating and echoing note from what sounds like a bass guitar with no actual bass-frequencies audible.

A distorted radio-like sample in the end leads me to thinking that the artist was aiming for a post-apocalyptic (or such) soundscape, and in that he succeeded.

It manages to sound lifeless through it’s whole lenght, while still retaining some grasp to the listener with it’s repeating rhythms.

Maybe I was wrong

As I’ve previously mentioned, Håkan Lidbo was commissioned to create a vuvuzela track by Swedish Radio. And I thought it would sound like generic electronica, but it actually doesn’t. That said, I personally don’t think the track itself is exciting. It’s rather bland and it could’ve been any track if it weren’t for the new-found popularity of the vuvuzela.

Swedish electronica composer/producer Håkan Lidbo has been asked by Swedish Radio P2 to create a vuvuzela song. It’s not surprising at all. I’m also assuming the song itself won’t be surprising or anything different from what he’s done before.

I have nothing personal against Håkan, but I find his music (while well-produced) boring. There are no surprises, it follows model 1A when it comes to electronica. The genre itself is somewhat generic, but who am I to judge?

It would’ve been much more interesting to hear someone different, and not affiliated with Ström, have a go at it. But SR and Håkan are holding their hands tightly, so… fat chance.

In march I replaced all the music on my mp3 player, and just as I got home from work today, the last song was played. I took me quite a while to choose the albums to replace the old ones with, but I got a nice mix. As mentioned before I’ve got three EP’s coming up on Witte Dood and just like before, I’m gonna do a friend version of them. Actually, I’m already done with it, as you can see below. Though, I’ll have to wait until I give it to people since the EP’s haven’t been released yet. But still, this is what it looks like, and as you can see – it features two bonus tracks – one of which will be available to download for free once everything is out.

YOTD CDR and attack of the inspiration

So the CDR version of YOTD came out today. Limited to 12 copies, with a couple already gone (pre-orders and such). The release itself is packed into 3 cdr’s, and I’ve tweaked the sounds and samples of the tracks just to make it better. Some minor re-arrangements have also been made. Haven’t figured out the price yet cause I don’t know how much shipping would be. But for Swedes, around 100 SEK.

Yesterday I walked into town to record the Fyris river, sadly there was too much ice to get to the best places, but I managed to get some stuff recorded. With the hydrophones I bought a while ago, and the cable I got last week, it’s so much fun to record. And today I recorded the piano at work for a final track for SISE.

However, I won’t be able to get SISE done until the ice goes away cause I need to properly record water in order to fix the final things.

Also, while I was walking around yesterday, I came up with an idea for an album title and its artwork. Now I just need to record the tracks… I guess that will be the project for spring, heh.

And yeah, the silent apartments project I started with Manifesto and Mrcien is done. At least when it comes to the music. We have some ideas for the title and the artwork, but haven’t decided on anything yet. We’ve also decided to start looking for a label to release it on (you run a label and wanna release it, contact me!).

That’s pretty much it for now. When I get home I need to update the Johan Hjort website with information about YOTD.

Artwork, tattoo and cable.

First things first, earlier today I dropped off the YOTD artwork at the printer’s, I’ll be getting it on Friday, so YOTD should be out early next week.

I also went by my favorite tattoo studio with some 20 pictures on a USB memory, and he thought they looked like fun. So in the end of March I’ll be dropping by again (he’s fully booked at the moment), then with better reference pictures. The idea is a LucasArts inspired full sleeve, with a touch of Red Dwarf.

And finally, I got the cable I’ve been waiting for. So now I can properly record water in stereo. The final touches to SISE should be done this week, or weekend.

And then Tarmskrap seems to be coming to town, so I’ll most likely meet him for a coffee or two.

Good times, except that it seems I’m about to get sick again.

Change of tunes

Walking to, and from, work without music would be hard for me to do. Even walking home from O‘s place without music is hard, and that takes about ten minutes. As you might understand, I need music to work in society and among my friends.

Today I removed all previous albums from my mp3 player and replaced them with new ones. Not new as in just-released, but as in that I haven’t listened to them before/recently.

Walking to work takes about 30 minutes, and walking back home obviously takes another 30 minutes. Then again, if I’m going downtown or to a friend it takes longer. So I listen to my mp3 player atleast an hour each day, except for weekends. I can usually fit over a 1000 tracks on the mp3 player and that takes a while to listen through.

Not long after I got my current mp3 player I noticed that it refuses to go from album to album when listening. So I decided to listen to all tracks in alphabetical order, which is nice cause it’s almost always a different genre from track to track.

The artwork for the CDR version of YOTD was done on Sunday, so I figured I’d walk to the printer on Monday. I didn’t do that. So I thought I’d do it today, but I didn’t. So I thought I’d do it tomorrow, but I won’t. I could do it on Thursday, but I probably won’t. And I really don’t think I will do it on Friday either.

So yeah, I’ll do it “tomorrow”…
